Dental Cleanings & Checkups in Malta, NY
What Happens at a Cleaning Here?
THE APPOINTMENT
A cleaning and checkup at Cocozzo Family Dentistry in Malta, New York is one appointment in which a registered dental hygienist removes plaque and hardened tartar, measures the gum tissue around every tooth and takes any images your exam calls for, after which Christina Cocozzo, DDS, completes the exam and shows you what she sees on an intraoral camera. Every cleaning here includes an oral cancer screening, appointments start as early as 7:00 AM Monday through Friday, and the practice accepts all major insurance and submits the claim for you.
Your hygienist removes plaque and the hardened tartar brushing cannot reach, polishes the teeth, and takes any dental images your exam calls for. She also measures the tissue around each tooth and records the numbers, so gum health is tracked as a trend rather than noticed once it is a problem.
Dr. Cocozzo then completes the exam and walks through what she has found before there is any talk of treatment. The office uses an intraoral camera, so you are looking at the same picture she is. Digital X-rays, intraoral photography, CBCT 3D imaging and digital Primescan scanning are all in use here.
Every visit includes an oral cancer screening — quick, non-invasive, part of the exam rather than an add-on. The NIDCR's oral cancer information makes the same point: catching a change early depends on routine soft-tissue examination.
BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
What Does the Team Do Before You Sit Down?
Your chart is read before you get here. The whole team goes through the day's schedule at a 6:30 AM huddle — what happened last visit, what was flagged to watch, what has changed in your health history, and anything you asked for last time. That is also why the first appointment starts on time.
Doors open at 7:00 AM Monday through Friday, closing at 4:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 2:00 PM Friday.
YOUR SCHEDULE
How Often Should You Come In?
Twice a year is the usual starting point, and for a lot of people it stays that way for decades. It is a starting point, not a rule.
Because Cocozzo Family Dentistry is an unrestricted practice, the interval is set by what your mouth needs rather than by what a benefit plan pays for. Patients managing gum disease, patients with a history of decay, and patients Dr. Cocozzo is watching for a reason are seen more often. You get a recommendation after your exam in Malta, not a default.
The ADA's patient resource MouthHealthy takes the same position: how often you are seen is decided with your dentist, not by a fixed number.
GUM MEASUREMENTS
Why Does the Hygienist Measure Your Gums Every Visit?
Because gum disease usually does not hurt early on, and the numbers change before the symptoms do. Your hygienist records the depth of tissue around each tooth at every visit, and Dr. Cocozzo reads those numbers the way a physician reads blood pressure — a trend to watch, not something to react to once it is advanced.
Bleeding when you brush or floss is the sign most people notice first. It is common, and it is not normal: it is usually early inflammation, the stage that responds best to treatment. The CDC's oral health guidance makes the same point — gum disease is widespread and, caught early, largely manageable. If the measurements start moving the wrong way, you hear about it while there is room to act.
HONEST LIMITS
When Can't a Cleaning Fix the Problem?
Often enough that it is worth saying plainly. A cleaning removes deposits and lets Dr. Cocozzo see clearly. It does not repair a tooth, and it does not treat disease that has already progressed.
A cavity through the enamel needs a filling or a crown. A cracked or worn tooth needs restorative work. Once gum disease has moved below the surface, a routine cleaning is the wrong tool — that is gum therapy, performed one side of the mouth at a time with a topical solution at the gum line, so most patients need no injections. And a cleaning will not whiten teeth: polishing removes surface stain, but changing the shade of the tooth is cosmetic work.
When a case is past what this office should handle, Dr. Cocozzo refers to a periodontist she knows personally and stays in the case. Naming the limit is not a smaller offer — it is how you avoid paying twice for the wrong treatment.
