Emergency Dentist in Malta, NY
Can You Be Seen the Same Day in Malta?
SAME-DAY CARE
Cocozzo Family Dentistry is an emergency dentist in Malta, New York that holds appointment time open for urgent cases every day, so a broken tooth, a lost crown or filling, swelling, or pain that will not settle can usually be seen the same day. Call (518) 899-5800 — the practice keeps 24/7 emergency access, and you do not have to be an existing patient to be seen.
Usually, yes. The office manager reviews the schedule before the day starts and sets aside time for emergencies — not because someone is known to be coming, but because someone might be. By the time you call, the space already exists.
You do not have to be an existing patient. Call (518) 899-5800 and describe what happened and when; that is what determines whether you need to be in today. You are then seen by Dr. Cocozzo rather than booked weeks out or routed elsewhere. Doors open at 7:00 AM Monday through Friday.
WHAT COUNTS
What Counts as a Dental Emergency?
Anything causing significant pain, swelling or bleeding, and anything stopping you eating, sleeping or working normally. In practice that means:
- A cracked or broken tooth
- A knocked-out tooth
- A lost crown or filling
- A dental abscess, or swelling around a tooth or in the face
- Severe tooth pain that will not go away
- A dental injury after a fall or a hit playing sport
The ADA's MouthHealthy guide to dental emergencies lists the same categories, so you are not guessing at what a dentist treats as urgent.
If you are not sure whether what you have counts, call. An abscess in particular is an infection rather than a bad ache — Mayo Clinic's patient guidance is clear that an untreated dental abscess does not resolve on its own and can spread.
BEFORE YOU ARRIVE
What Should You Do Before You Get Here?
Call (518) 899-5800 first. Then handle the specific problem.
A knocked-out tooth. Time matters more than anything else. Handle the tooth by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with water rather than scrubbing. Put it back in the socket if you can; if you cannot, keep it moist in milk or between your cheek and gum on the way in. The American Association of Endodontists publishes the same handling steps.
Pain you are waiting out. Ibuprofen or acetaminophen and a cold compress against the outside of the face give temporary relief. Avoid very hot and very cold food near the area, and stay on soft food if chewing hurts.
A lost crown or filling. Keep the piece if you have it, and avoid chewing on that side.
None of this replaces being seen. It gets you to the appointment in better shape.
AFTER HOURS
What If It Happens After Hours or on a Weekend?
Call (518) 899-5800. The number does not change after 4:00 PM, at the weekend or on a holiday — Cocozzo Family Dentistry keeps 24/7 emergency access, and has for over 30 years.
Say what happened and when. A tooth knocked out at 9:00 PM and a crown that came off at 9:00 PM are not the same urgency, and the description is what sorts them.
WHEN NOT US
When Should You Go to an ER or a Specialist Instead?
Some emergencies are not dental-office emergencies, and it is worth knowing which before you are in one.
Go to a hospital emergency room, not a dentist, if you have swelling affecting your breathing or swallowing, bleeding that will not stop, a jaw you think may be broken, or a facial injury from a serious accident. A dental office is not equipped for a compromised airway or major trauma, and coming here first costs you the time that matters most.
A specialist rather than this office, for part of what is left. Dr. Cocozzo performs most extractions herself in Malta, but impacted teeth, significant bone involvement and complex cases go to an oral surgeon she knows personally. Root canals go to an endodontist whose whole practice is that one procedure — she refers, then completes the crown afterward here, and follows up. Knowing which door to walk through first is the part that actually saves the tooth.
