Dental Sealants in Malta, NY
A thin protective coating for back teeth — one of the simplest, most effective ways to prevent cavities before they start.
A Simple Way to Prevent Cavities
The back molars are where most childhood cavities happen. The grooves on the chewing surface are deep and hard to clean thoroughly — even with good brushing. Food and bacteria settle there easily.
Sealants solve that problem by creating a thin, protective layer over those grooves, blocking bacteria from getting in to begin with.
The process is quick and completely painless — no needles, no drilling. The tooth is cleaned and dried, the sealant is applied, and then set with a light. That’s it. It takes just a few minutes per tooth, and your child leaves with protection that can last for years.
Dr. Cocozzo typically recommends sealants when the permanent molars come in — usually between ages six and twelve.
It’s one of the most effective preventive tools we have — far simpler and far less expensive than treating a cavity after it forms.
What are dental sealants?
Thin protective coatings placed on the back teeth to help prevent cavities. Sealants are applied to the chewing surfaces of molars, where grooves and pits tend to trap food and bacteria. They create a smoother surface that’s easier to keep clean. They don’t replace brushing and flossing, but they significantly reduce the risk of decay in the areas most vulnerable to it.
How long do sealants last?
Typically five to ten years, depending on wear. Dr. Cocozzo checks them at every visit and can reapply them if needed. They’re most effective when placed on newly erupted permanent teeth — before decay has a chance to develop.
Are sealants only for kids?
They’re most common for kids, but some adults benefit too. If your back teeth have deep grooves and no existing decay or fillings, sealants may still make sense. Dr. Cocozzo can take a look and let you know if they’re worth considering.
Does insurance cover dental sealants?
Many plans cover sealants for children, usually up to a certain age. Coverage varies by plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does getting sealants hurt?
Not at all — there’s no drilling or needles involved. The tooth is simply cleaned, dried, and coated. Most kids barely notice it. It’s one of the easiest things we do.Can my child eat normally after sealants?
Yes — they can eat right away. There’s no recovery time. We may suggest avoiding very sticky or hard foods for a day or two, but otherwise there are no restrictions. Will sealants change how my child’s teeth feel?
Sometimes, briefly. A few kids notice a slight difference in their bite at first, but it usually settles within a day or two. If anything still feels off after that, we’ll take a look and adjust if needed.
