Children's Dental Cleanings in Malta, NY
Gentle cleanings and exams for kids of all ages — starting as early as age one, at a pace that feels right for your child.
A Dental Visit That Feels Calm, Not Rushed
We start seeing kids as early as age one just to help them get familiar with the office, but there’s no rigid timeline. Some kids are ready at two; others need a little more time. We move at a pace that feels right for you and your child, without pressure and without making them feel bad for being nervous.
PBS is already on the TV before you walk in.
The hygiene team has prize tokens ready at the counter.
The appointment is calm, unhurried, and built around your child — not the schedule.
At the end of the visit, they get a token for the prize machine — and something to look forward to next time.
Dr. Cocozzo also keeps a close eye on how your child’s teeth are developing over time. When it’s time to talk about orthodontics, she uses an intraoral camera to show you exactly what she’s seeing.
The conversation is clear and straightforward.
The referral forms are ready.
No surprises — just honest guidance so you can make the right call for your child.
When should my child first see the dentist?
Around age one — or within six months of the first tooth. We see children as young as one, sometimes just to help them get comfortable with the office. There’s no pressure to do a full cleaning right away. Cleanings typically begin around age two or three, depending on your child’s comfort level.
What happens at a child’s dental cleaning?
A gentle cleaning, a quick exam, and a check on how everything is developing. We remove plaque buildup, polish the teeth, and apply fluoride if appropriate.
Dr. Cocozzo checks how the teeth and jaw are developing, looks for early signs of cavities, and lets you know if anything needs attention. If X-rays are needed, she’ll explain why and make sure your child is comfortable before moving forward.
My child is scared of the dentist. How do you handle that?
We slow everything down and meet them where they are. If your child just wants to sit in the chair and look around, that’s fine. If it takes a few visits before anything happens, that’s fine too.
The goal is a positive experience — not a completed checklist. Let us know ahead of time, and we’ll plan the visit around your child.
Does insurance cover children’s dental cleanings?
Most plans cover preventive care like cleanings, exams, and X-rays, but exact coverage varies by plan.
What if my child has a cavity at their first checkup?
First, take a breath — it's more common than you'd think, and it doesn't automatically mean drilling. When we catch decay early, before it's broken through the surface of the tooth, we can often treat it without a drill or a needle at all.
One of the ways we do that is Curodont — a quick, painless treatment applied right to the early spot that helps rebuild the weakened enamel from the inside out, stopping the decay before it ever becomes a filling. For your child, it just feels like a coating brushed onto the tooth. No numbing, no sound of a drill, nothing to dread.
The honest part: this works when we catch a cavity early. If decay has already gone deeper into the tooth, a filling is still the right call — and we'll tell you that plainly and walk you through it. But the earlier we see your child, the more often the gentle option is on the table. It's one more reason those first visits matter.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should my child come in?
Twice a year is the usual starting point. Some kids may benefit from more frequent visits — especially if they’re cavity-prone or we’re watching how things are developing. Dr. Cocozzo will give you a specific recommendation after the first exam.At what age should I start worrying about braces?
Around age seven is when an initial evaluation is often recommended. Dr. Cocozzo monitors development at every visit and will let you know when it makes sense. She’ll show you exactly what she’s seeing and refer you to an orthodontist she trusts — no pressure, just helpful information early. Can my child be seen by the same hygienist each visit?
We do our best to keep that consistent whenever possible. Familiarity makes a big difference for kids — it helps reduce anxiety and makes each visit feel easier. It also means the hygienist already knows your child and their history when they sit down.
